Seismic Zone

The seismic design category for a structure is permitted to be determined in accordance with 2022 OSSC §1613 or ASCE 7-16. All of Tualatin is located in seismic zone D - Default with engineer verified SDS value.

Basic Wind Speed

All of the City of Tualatin is wind speed 97 mph (x1.61 for km/h) for risk category II structures. Modifications to wind speed for other risk categories are determined using the 2022 OSSC §1609, and Table 1609.3.

Wind Exposure Category and Wind Loads

The architect or structural engineer responsible for the design of the structure shall determine the wind exposure and wind loads as defined in the 2022 OSSC §1609.4 and §1609.1.1 respectively.

Soil Bearing - Commercial/Industrial Projects

All new commercial buildings and additions within the flood plain or within the city's Urban Growth Boundary require a geotechnical soils report as part of the permit application submittal.

Soil Bearing - Single Family Dwellings

Default allowable foundation bearing capacity within the City of Tualatin is 1,500 psf (minimum 12” wide footing). Designs specifying greater than 2000psf bearing capacity must provide stamped engineering designs and a geotechnical soils report.

Snow Loads

Design snow loads for commercial buildings/structures shall be determined in accordance with Chapter 7 of ASCE 7-16, as modified by OSSC Section 1608. Ground snow load pg shall be determined using the Structural Engineers Association of Oregon (SEAO) online tool

Frost Depth

Minimum frost depth is 12 inches for elevations less than 400 feet.

Flood Zones

The City of Tualatin has areas that fall within the floodway and the 100-year floodplain of the Tualatin River. To determine if your site is within the flood zone, please contact Engineer Associate Tony Doran. See the 2022 OSSC §1612.
