Temporary Sign Regulations

Tualatin Sign Placement Diagram

Temporary signs include stake and lawn signs, a-frames, balloons, streamers or any other portable signs. Typically these signs are used for advertising, garage sales, lost and found animals, political campaigns, private events and real estate.

Sign Placement

Signs are never allowed in a right-of-way under State, County and City Codes. The right-of-way is reserved for the use of public streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic control devices, and public utilities. Signs must be placed on private property with permission from the property owner. Signs should not be attached to street signs, utility poles, trees or located in the right-of-way within 10 feet of any street or 25 feet of an intersection, or in the planter strip. Signs on private property must still be in compliance with type, size, location, design and permit requirements.

Public Right-of-Way

In general the right-of-way is an area of land reserved for public uses or utilities, such as roadways, sidewalks, planter strips, sewer and water lines, storm drainage facilities, telephone, television cable, gas, electric lines, and other public utilities. Signs are not permitted in this area.

Planter Strip

The planter strip is the strip of land between the sidewalk and street and contains street trees in some locations. It is also referred to as the median, meridian or boulevard. Signs are not permitted in planter strips.

Sign Removal

Residents are permitted to remove stake signs from major intersections as well as signs attached to poles and street signs. Removed signs can be placed face down in the nearby landscaping and will be picked up during regular maintenance. Most signs are taken to City of Tualatin Public Works.

Commercial Advertising Signs

Temporary signs are not permitted for advertising on commercial property. Contact the Planning Division for additional information on permanent signs for your business. Banners are allowed when attached directly to the building for a period of 60 days and with the proper permit prior to placement.
