TUALATIN POLICE INVESTIGATE CLAIMS OF SCHOOL SHOOTING PLOT
On Friday December 14, 2012 at about 11:00AM School officials at Tualatin High School were made aware of a social media posting from a student that stated they were not coming to school on Friday (12/21) because of a possible shooting threat at Tualatin High School. School officials immediately reported this information to the Tualatin Police Department.
The initial information brought forward was that there was to be a school shooting during the morning hours of Friday, December 21, 2012. This information spread rapidly throughout the student body and through social media.
Tualatin Police have interviewed numerous students and were unable to substantiate any of the information we had received. As of Friday afternoon, Tualatin Police had exhausted all investigative leads, although the information continued to spread through several social media outlets. During the weekend, both the school and police continued to receive information regarding the threat. Tualatin Police have also learned that several other area schools were dealing with similar circumstances. At this point in the investigation, it appears that the threats may have been rumors that were spread through various means.
The Tualatin Police Department will continue to investigate information and possible investigative leads that come to light from students, parents, or school staff.
The Tualatin Police and the School District take any threat of harm to students or staff very seriously. Tualatin Police wants to remind parents to talk with their children about the importance of reporting any information that may pose a threat of harm to anyone.
