Improvements are Coming Soon to the Area around the Nyberg/I-5 Interchange!

Have you ever been frustrated while stuck in traffic near the Tualatin-Sherwood Road / Nyberg Street / I-5 interchange? Or, if you have ridden your bicycle there, did you experience some concern—or fear?

Those past experiences are about to improve for travelers at Tualatin’s highest traffic volume interchange. In 2023, one of Tualatin Moving Forward’s signature projects will make travel here safer and more predictable. A series of small strategic changes to the area will ensure it operates more smoothly:

  • Add a third eastbound lane from Martinazzi Ave to I-5
  • Repave and restripe lanes for more efficient traffic flow
  • Install overhead signage
  • Improve bicycle access and safety throughout this corridor

Eastbound drivers will see a new lane created by narrowing the median. The overhead signage and lane markings will guide drivers into the correct lane and minimize last-second lane changes approaching the north- and south-bound I-5 ramps.

The payoff will be significant time savings for drivers. Travel time from Boones Ferry to I-5 will be:

Morning rush hour ✓ Reduced from 6.5 minutes to 4 minutes

Afternoon rush hour ✓ Reduced from 8 minutes to 6 minutes

For people who ride bikes in this area, the eastbound bike lane, which currently squeezes between two lanes of traffic, will be relocated to be next to the curb. A new signalized crossing will help bicyclists safely cross the I-5 southbound ramp. In addition, new buffered bike lanes and signage will direct people to the existing Tualatin River Greenway path that connects underneath I-5—a much safer and more pleasant route through the area.

Construction is expected to begin in April, after four years of engineering design, community engagement and agency coordination. The project will be completed by the end of this year. To avoid disruption, most construction work will occur at night.

The project is estimated to cost $2.7 million. Funding is from Tualatin Moving Forward, the $24 million bond program approved by voters in May 2018.
